Battle Mountain sits along Interstate 80 between
Winnemucca and
Elko in the northeastern part of Nevada. Despite its name, Battle Mountain has never seen conflicts of note, and instead was established and still thrives on the railroad, agriculture, and mining industries. It is also rich with American Indian and Basque heritage. Today, visitors can enjoy food and gaming at the popular Owl Club, participate in special events, and indulge in outdoor recreation in what some term the “Gateway to America’s Outback.”
Admittedly there’s not much in Battle Mountain, and that’s just the way Nevadans like it. The abundance of outdoor adventure what draws visitors to this quiet Nevada town. Battle Mountain is surrounded by thousands of acres of public land, including mountain ranges and two rivers, the Humboldt and the Reese, making wildlife viewing and scenic drives plentiful. The area also offers the adventure seeker an abundance of hiking, biking, off-roading, fishing, and hunting in places such as Copper Basin, Willow Creek, and Lewis Canyon. Battle Mountain only asks, “Are you tough enough?”
Unique special events also make Battle Mountain a great place to visit and play. The World Human Powered Speed Challenge combines human strength with technology as participants compete on one of the smoothest, flattest roads in the nation. The Basque population also celebrates its colorful culture with a Basque Club Winter Festival featuring traditional dancing and food. Experience the thrill of the Pony Express Open Road Race where drivers legally can go as fast as their cars will take them on quiet Highway 305.
